OF TARİHİNE DAİR BAZI GÖZLEMLER - SOME OBSERVATIONS REGARDING THE HISTORY OF OF

ÖZ

Of, XIX. yüzyılda ortaya çıkmış bir sahil kasabasıdır. Bölge tarih boyunca pek çok devletin hâkimiyeti altında kalmıştır. Aynı şekilde yörede çeşitli toplulukların yaşadığına dair izler mevcuttur. Ancak bu gelişmeler hep çevredeki sahada olmuştur. Bugünkü Of’un olduğu yerde XIX. yüzyıla kadar bir yerleşim yeri yoktur. Daha önce Solaklı deresinin denize ulaştığı yerdeki Moroz iskelesi etrafındaki ticaret merkezinden ibaret olan bu yörede XVIII. yüzyılda cami yapılması ile yoğunluk artmaya başlamıştır. Çevredeki köylerden bir gün önceden Cuma namazı kılmak için gelen ahali alışverişini yaptıktan sonra Pazar günü geri dönmekteydi. Bu da onların barınabileceği yer ihtiyacını ortaya çıkardı. Böylece Of kasabasının oluşumu başladı. İskelenin yanı sıra pazar ve mahkeme kurulmasıyla idare yeri haline gelen Of, Osmanlı fethinden sonra özellikle Karamanoğlu, Dulkadiroğlu ve Akkoyunlu hâkimiyetindeki bölgelerden gelen Türkmen unsurlarla kısa sürede İslamlaşmaya başladı. Gürcistan’dan göç eden Kıpçak toplulukları da bölgedeki Türk nüfusu güçlendirdi. Bu gelişmeler sonucunda küçük bir azınlık haline gelen Rum Ortodoksların son temsilcileri mübadeleyle bölgeden ayrılınca, Of’un bugünkü nüfus yapısı ortaya çıkmış oldu.

ABSTRACT

“Of” is a coastal town emerged in the 19th century. Throughout history, the town remained under the control of various states. Similarly, there were signs to indicate that, within same region, several communities existed. However, these developments occured only in the same region. There were no settlements in the present location of Of till the 19th century. Previously, in this region solely consisting of a commercial center of Moroz quay where Solaklı reached the sea, the density of population began to increase with the establishment of a mosque in the 18th century. The local people from the neighbouring villages used to come earlier to join Friday prayers and then turn back to their villages after trading. This eventually led to the satisfaction of the need of accomodations. Thus the story of the establishment of Of commenced. The town then turned into a spot of administration with the formation of a quay, a market and a court, and began to be islamised with the arrivals of the Turkish tribes migrating from the regions under the domination of Karaman, Dulkadir and Akkoyun. The Kipchak people that came from Georgia strenghtened the Turkish population as well. As a result of these changes, when the last represantatives of the Greek Orthodoxes that decreased to minority left the region due to the exchange of population, the current structure of the town Of came out.
